DC Resistivity,
IP & SP Systems & Software
System description
The AGI range of products comprise a
suite of geophysical instruments designed for the rapid collection and
interpretation of DC resisitivity, induced polarization (IP) and
self-potential (SP) data.
The DC resistivity imaging method is especially valuable in
areas where ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic (EM)
methods do not work because of conductive overburden. Conductive
materials, for example clay, attenuate the GPR & EM signal resulting in
low depth penetration and poor data quality. In such areas the resistivity
method is an excellent alternative for subsurface 2D and 3D mapping of the
near surface.
Field Procedure
Field procedure is simple and involves three easy steps:
First set out electrode stakes at even intervals.
Then lay out the Swift cable and attach each take-out
to the stakes.
Finally connect the Sting to the Swift cable, perform
an automatic test to check that everything is connected correctly and
then start the automatic recording.
The resistivity measurements are stored directly in the
memory of the receiver unit. When the field measurement is complete the
data can be downloaded to a PC, inverted from apparent resistivity into
"true" resistivity, and presented as a color cross-section of the
subsurface.
For special studies a PC can also be connected to the
Sting/Swift to control the measurement procedure and thereby automatically
record data from any possible electrode array.
A complete system is composed of:
a transmitter/receiver (i.e. MiniSting, SuperSting R1,
SuperSting R8, SuperSting Marine)
a multi-electrode cable (Swift)
electrodes
software (EarthImager/2D)
Instrument Summary:
SuperSting R8 IP, is an eight
channel instrument with IP capabilities, specially designed for large surveys like 3D,
bore hole to bore hole and very large 2D surveys. The SuperSting R8 is an 8-channel
instrument which takes up to eight readings for each current injection.
The SuperSting R8 is therefore up to eight times faster than the one-channel
instruments, important when performing large time consuming surveys.
SuperSting R1 IP is a single-channel version of
the SuperSting R8 and has superseded the old Sting R1.
The MiniSting is a low cost, single channel earth
resistivity and IP instrument which saves data to memory.
Swift multi-electrode cables - All "Sting" models
work with the Swift multi-electrode cables.
Applications include:
-
Geotechnical investigations;
-
Fracture and cavity detection in bedrock;
-
Groundwater exploration;
-
Environmental investigation (i.e., mapping of pollution
plumes, etc.)
-
Investigation of dam leakage;
-
Sand and gravel exploration (i.e. paleochannel
delineation);
-
Site characterization for development;
-
Site investigation for horizontal drilling;
-
Site investigation for tunnelling operation;
-
Archaeological studies.
